Chapter 4: Thursday - Learning to Avoid Mistakes in Goal Setting

It is common for anyone to have ups and downs when trying to achieve a certain task. While the passion may be there, there are times when we just simply fail to keep up with consistently doing our smaller tasks. Since the success of habit stacking relies on repeated efforts, done daily and consistently, having a major step back can really break our streak. To avoid this, here are all too common mistakes in goal settings you need to avoid so that you will experience slip-ups less often.

Regardless of what your goals are, people fall out of focus. Sometimes, distractions can veer us away form the prize at hand. It might be because you are having a difficult time, or that other things going on in your life distract you. But recognizing you are falling out of focus is an important step and this helps you to get back on your feet the moment it happens.

It is important to write down your daily tasks because without it, you fail to take stock of the situation. Assess how habit stacking processes can help you out and figure out the things you might do differently in order to affect the positive change you wish to see.

Having goals is a good thing, but having too much of it can be a problem. It may become extremely difficult for anyone to achieve it all, especially when you have a long list of tasks to do. Be realistic, prioritize what needs to be done first, and limit these goals. Trying to do everything at once can often lead to frustration. Pick out the most important ones to do first, then move on the next few only when you’ve achieved the first few.

Giving in to lack of motivation is one of the worst things you can do in the process of habit stacking. It basically ensures you will not be able to get anything done and is form of self-sabotage on your part. If this is a problem, you will need to go back to your “why.” If it happens more often and regularly, then you may not be as passionate about the change you want to see as you first thought. Try to re-evaluate your goal to see if it’s something you really want. Chances are, consistent lack of motivation can be an indicating factor that you were half-hearted about your resolve in the first place.

Not setting boundaries can be dangerous. Part of staying focused and motivated lies on clear-cut boundaries. When you begin to realize the things that are vitally important to you are not up on the same list as other people around you, you may find that this contrast in professional and personal goals may end in conflict. Because of this, boundaries help to let everyone else see you are committed and dedicated to seeing everything else through despite the fact it’s not what everyone necessarily expects from you.

It is very common
